The project is announced
For the first time, we’re sharing a story that has been with us for a long time.
Coming in 2027
a drama short film set during the Finnish Civil War
It is early 1918. The Finnish Civil War places a farmer from Vehkalahti and his farmhand on opposing sides, but sometimes the bonds of friendship are stronger than political divisions...
About the film
An ancient pine tree in Metsäkylä, Hamina, stands as a silent witness to a story in which civil war pits friendship against ideology. The deep bond between a young farmer, Väinö, and his farmhand, Viljo, is put to the test when their social standing places them on opposite sides of the war. As the balance of power shifts, the boundary between conviction and loyalty is tested. What story will be etched into the old pine’s growth rings?
A closer look
Why
The Civil War remains one of Finland’s most painful memories. It divided villages, families and generations. It is not remembered through tales of heroism. As memories of the war fade and the years pass, we have an opportunity to lift the curtain and compare the events of that time with today’s polarised world.
What burdens do we carry as a nation? What can we learn from the past?
Events in today’s world make polarisation an ever more pressing theme.
For the filmmakers, this is a personal story that deserves to be told.
